Algo Trading - Frequently Asked Questions

What is algo trading?

Algo trading (algorithmic trading) is a rule-based approach to trading where you define specific entry, exit, stop loss, and profit target rules before executing trades. Instead of relying on emotions or gut feelings, you test these rules on historical data to validate their effectiveness. Algo strategies can be fully automated (code executes trades), semi-automated (software generates signals you execute manually), or discretionary guidelines.

The key advantage is consistency—removing emotional decision-making while following a tested, systematic approach. Popular platforms include TradeStation, NinjaTrader, and MultiCharts for futures, forex, and stock trading.

What is a simple algo trading system?

A super simple algo trading strategy: If price crosses above the 200 day moving average, buy. Sell when price crosses below 200 day average.

How does algo trading differ from chart or discretionary trading?

Algo trading uses objective, predefined rules that can be backtested on historical data, while discretionary trading relies on subjective interpretation of charts, patterns, and trader intuition. In discretionary trading, you make real-time decisions based on what you see, often influenced by emotions like fear and greed. Algo trading removes this emotional element—every decision is predetermined and systematic.

The critical difference: algo strategies can be validated before risking capital by testing rules on years of historical data. Discretionary traders can't backtest their gut feelings or chart-reading skills, making it harder to know if their approach truly has an edge.
